CBD Oil and Epilepsy – Benefits, Wellness, Ways to Subside the Seizures

CBD word cloud

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a chemical compound in marijuana that has been known to have plenty of therapeutic uses for illness and pain. Cannabis oil is gaining popularity rapidly as a natural and non-invasive way to regulate epileptic seizures. Several pieces of evidence suggest that cannabis oil may help people control their epileptic seizures and potentially save their lives. Studies have shown that taking cannabis oil with recommended pharmaceutical drugs helps combat hard-to-treat epilepsy in children as well as in adults.

What Is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder involving abnormal brain activity that results in unprovoked seizures. Epilepsy affects people of all age; however, seizure symptoms can vary drastically ranging from mild to severe. Those who have seizure disorders are more likely prone to anxiety and depression, as well as some accidents and injuries resulting from falls.

Interestingly, in some cases, epilepsy will go away on its own without taking any medicine while in others, it can last throughout their entire life. Though there are anti-epileptic drugs available, they are not proven effective for everyone. Therefore, the research on CBD oil is an effort to explore whether the use of CBD oil along with or from, conventional antiepileptic drugs can help alleviate seizure frequency severity.

CBD and Epilepsy

After a series of clinical trials, it is now proven that CBD can reduce certain epileptic conditions. Pure cannabidiol containing less than 0.1% THC has been prescribed in certain complex conditions for children and adolescents suffering from seizures. According to a study published in the Journal of Epilepsy Research, pharmaceutical preparations of CBD oil are effective against two types of severe childhood epilepsy; Dravet Syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome. Several states have legalized the use of CBD oil specifically for the treatment of epilepsy or seizure disorders.

Is CBD Safe for Epilepsy?

CBD is proven to be overall safe and well-tolerated, although it can cause some side effects and may interfere with some specific medications. The main focus of utilizing CBD oil is avoiding the psychoactive properties that THC contains. The higher the dosage, the more common side effects were prevalent. To minimize the side effects of CBD, it should be taken as advised by your physician starting with a low dosage first and work toward an amount that is effective and manageable.
